| Why I am in SCANA |

Some SCANA folks explain their involvement. " I am a member of SCANA for three reasons. As a minister in the Church of Scotland, I have long supported the Church's view that nuclear weapons, their use or threatened use, are contrary to the Gospel. Belief needs to be expressed in action, and I believe that the non-violent, direct action undertaken through SCANA is one way of expressing what I believe. And I know myself well enough to know that I need the challenge, support and encouragement of others to sustain my commitment - and I receive this from my fellow members in SCANA." (John Harvey). For more than 50 years I have been on many church committees. Most of them are asking other people to do things, or releasing funds so someone can do something .SCANA is different. Under its old name " Clergy Action " it empowered me to do things I could never do on my own. SCANA clears away the fog of misunderstanding of what ministers can or should be doing . It gives comradeship and encouragement where needed. It expresses spiritual challenges and faces practical realities. Without SCANA I would not have spoken or written as boldly about nuclear weapons - nor would I have been arrested at Faslane. These are some of the reasons why SCANA is different ---and one thing more . Our meetings seem to produce more laughter than any other I can think of . We are totally serious about our purpose, but never take ourselves seriously at all ! (Ainslie Walton) I support SCANA because… God waits for “his shouts of protest” from us. The supposed political power of the Bomb fades when placed alongside the power of vulnerable love demonstrated at the cross. Trident is inimical both to the power and to the wisdom of God. As a Christian I can do no other. Goodness is stronger than evil. (John Webster). More to follow….. IDEAS FOR ACTION Write or send an email to Alex Salmond (copied to all MSPs) asking that his Government demand that Trident be removed from Scotland within two years. You can use the fact that the majority of Scots do not want to support nuclear weapons and certainly do not want to be implicated in war crime preparations by hosting Trident and that it is morally repugnant to host any weapon of mass destruction - which is a form of terrorism. You can also point out that all mainline churches stand united in their opposition to Trident. |
