Easter Witness 2012

SCANA are organising an Easter Witness for Peace at the gates of the Faslane nuclear-weapon base at 12 noon on Saturday 31 March 2012. Participants will include Very Rev Alan McDonald (on behalf of the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland), Rt Rev Joseph Toal (Bishop of Argyll and the Isles, Roman Catholic Church), Bruce Kent (Vice President of CND), Kathy Galloway (Head of Christian Aid Scotland), Rev Peter Macdonald (leader of the Iona Community) and Rev David Mumford (Dean of Brechin, Scottish Episcopal Church). Music will be led by members of the Wild Goose Resource Group.  This follows the successful event that was held in 2011. Once again the witness for peace will be held on the day before Palm Sunday. Please encourage people to take part. Trains are every 30 minutes Glasgow/Helensburgh and buses from Helensburgh to Coulport or Garelochhead are every 30 minutes. 

 
Churches and Trident

The Church and Society Council of the Church of Scotland have published new materials on Trident. These include a bible study, a leaflet and a briefing. There is also a new handout - "Better off without Trident"  - from the Baptist Union of Great Britain, the Methodist Church and the United Reformed Church   

 
Trident study for discussion groups
SCANA have drafted a study on Trident  for use by discussion groups.  This will be circulated by the Church and Society Council of the Church of Scotland for Lent 2012.

Church of Scotland criticises spending on Trident
Church leaders have called on the UK government to clarify its position on replacing the country's nuclear deterrent. The Rev Ian Galloway, convener of the Kirk's church and society council, said: "We are very concerned the Ministry of Defence appears to be committed to spending over £2 billion of our money on submarines to carry Trident before the official decision on whether or not to go ahead with it."
